The three western rivers India surrendered contained 80 % of water of Indus delta, as opposed to 20% of eastern rivers (2/n)
The only instance in the history of modern world where an upstream nation was contained with less than half a share (3/n)
To top that, Nehru made a payment of 62 million sterlings to Pakistan for "canals" They did not even ask for it (4/n)
India had no compulsion at all to sign this treaty and was well within its rights to reject it even under UN charter (5/n)
Since India agreed not to touch Indus, Ladakh remained an uncultivated land. Ladakhis continue to remain nomadic people (6/n)
Indus treaty left pakistan with a surplus water of 72 maf. Simply went into sea. Left India with a deficit of 13 maf (7/n)
"We purchased peace" was Nehru's reply to the question as to why he agreed to this deal (8/n).
But Nehru did not purchase any peace. No conditions put forth. It was a one way concession all the way (9/n)
Nehru later admitted his mistake."I had hoped this agreement would open the way to settlement, but we are where we were"(10/n)
Due to Indus treaty and Pak appeasement,, J&K remains a water deficit and electricity deficit state to this day (11/n)
On that occasion,Nehru talked of global peace. Perhaps he wanted to be recognized as a global prophet of peace (12/n)
